Camping Les Castel’s
Parc de Fierbois
I think that it is pretty well known that the French really do know how to do camping but when we visited Camping Castel’s Parc de Fierbois last summer we discovered that these people take it to a whole new level.
Way back in 1959 Georges Pilliet founded the “Les Castels” association with the goal of encouraging château owners to open up their properties to campers in order to promote, maintain, preserve and share an endangered heritage.
At the time it was considered to be a crazy idea but camping at a château has proven to be a resolutely visionary idea and has withstood the test of time. The Castels family now includes 41 independent owners who have opened up their family estates to outdoor tourism. All the Castel sites now proudly boast four or five star ratings as destinations where you can experience outdoor living without giving up your modern comforts.
Parc de Fierbois was created by Max de Lussac back in 1966 as a destination for local people to fish, swim and relax in a tranquil and natural setting. In 1971 he made the decision to join the Castels chain.
Located in the heart of the Loire Valley the Parc has 420 emplacements.
If camping is your thing, it turns into a real art de vivre with Les Castels. Whether you are taking your tent, caravan or camping car you will find spacious and well looked-after pitches.
All the Castels campgrounds have four or five stars and are all, without exception, compliant with the ‘Camping-Qualité’ standards. This guarantees you’ll find pitches with a minimum surface area of 100m2.
If you are looking to get close to nature but don’t like the thought of not having your creature comforts around you then consider one of the wide selection of high-quality rental accommodations. Mobile homes, chalets, cottages and flats and even the fashionable tree houses are available.
We had a three bedroom mobile home which was very well equipped, modern and very clean. It also had a covered patio/terrace with table and chairs and was set in a spacious, hedged area which provided us with plenty of privacy.
Being set in the heart of the Loire valley, Parc de Fierbois is a perfect location to explore the famous vineyards of the Touraine and of course the magnificent Chateaux. Amboise, Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau and Villandry are all within striking distance.
The parc itself has a big water park where you can relax on a sun bed and have fun in the water with toboggans, water games and paddling pools for toddlers. When the weather is not so good there is also a 6x16m, covered and heated pool which has a great view across the lake.
Also on site there is a playground for children, Mini Golf, a Skate park, Horse riding, and two tennis courts.
The site sits in a century-old oak tree forest with a large lake which is well stocked for the fishermen/women amongst you or you can just take a relaxing walk around it and enjoy the natural setting.
During July and August there is an adventure trail around the lake which includes a big Accrobranche with three long zip slides across the water. Equipment is supplied and a qualified instructor is always present (a cost is incurred for this activity).
Our little group included three generations with an age range from 11 to 87 years old. We all really enjoyed Parc de Fierbois and the quality of the experience that Les Castels provided.
